I feel like the map making portion of the stream really did help you a bit with navigation, and it seemed like you were enjoying making it also so I'm glad you're having fun with the game and adding your own special touch to solving the problem of not having a map. Thanks for the stream Enna I wanted to give you a warning now before it is too late. If you modify (ascend) a weapon to Fire, Lightning, Magic, etc., you can't undo it later, and it puts the weapon on a completely different upgrade path from what you have been doing so far. I'm only saying this so you don't accidentally mess up a weapon you were enjoying by trying things out (I have made that mistake myself ). As a bonus tip, without going into numbers, if you are willing to put the effort into fully upgrading a standard weapon, it usually ends up doing more damage than the elemental versions.
