It's become clear to me that in order to get past these guys we need a very specific set of skills. Stealth. Espionage. Maybe a little killing. In other words, we need a to be like a Hit -man- Hearthian.

Meditating to end the loop early was explicitly explained as "dozing off and waiting until the end gets you". So yes, it's canonically the same as dozing off near a fire (just without the option to wake up again) - and as a result it acts the same for gameplay purposes.
