3:23:42 fan with vet experience and behavioral science knowledge here. Regarding the second cat; it really is a coin flip whether or not MeowMeow is gonna get along with the other cat. I wouldn’t say that cats are pack animals like dogs are, they’re more like colony animals, which means that they need their own territories but can be happy with each other and like many people said, even become besties. I’m gonna start with the negatives, but don’t get scared, i just think it’s important to know: My personal experience with having two cats in one house was not the best. I was supremely poor in my early 20s with a young cat and had not much of a choice in living arrangements. I would move with my own cat to another house with a cat. My baby was independent but could tolerate other cats. She just would be like “ok that’s too close, leave me alone” and hiss at the others, but she would leave it at that, she wouldn’t outright attack, just avoid and stand her ground. Some cat roommates get used to it and just respected her space, one was kind of a quirky boy and didn’t understand her social cues and always wanted to play with her, but was otherwise ok, and then one cat was out for murder moment one. Their first meeting was chaos, they seemed ok, but then the other cat began to stalk her and pounce her like prey, and we immediately hard separated for the whole time i was there. However it was difficult, bc if either snuck through it was so stressful. Again these are negative EXP and putting those out there just so you’re wary of watching their behaviors closely- but like everyone else said it can also go great! Honestly I think your best bet is to do all of the research in the world before introducing a new baby. In 2025, there’s many more experts sharing knowledge online and making it accessible to help new introductions be successful. In my current work, I go to people’s houses to specifically care for cats and dogs, therefore I often get to see cats in their homes. There are many multiple cat homes with successful set ups. If i were to say what is the secret ingredient, i would say that the happiest kitties have parents who made a commitment to make their kitties happy and invested a LOT into “catification”. You can look into this term but basically, catification is when you add a lot of enrichment inside the house for your cats to feel almost as if they have an indoor jungle to play in, where they can go from point x to point y without ever touching the floor, just jumping around. This usually involves making sure there are many cat towers, climb space, easy pathways, cubby holes etc. Some even have “catios”. Seriously- look up catification and you will find some very creative set ups! Some even use floating book shelves which I think is pretty cool. You don’t even have to go as insane as a lot of people do, but just the basic concept of it helps a lot. Think like a cat! Also! Idk if you’ve run into Jackson Galaxy yet, but he had pretty good guides in early 2010 on how to introduce cats to each other for the very first time. He made a lot of videos for the public, which was a pretty baller move from him. Since it’s no longer 2010 you can also just… probably find someone else lmao, but he’s the one of the people who set me on my pet behavior career path hence why i recommend him. My advice is to look for people who specifically follow positive behavior models. You’ll know you’re on the right track if they recommend things such as feliway plug-ins, separating cats into different rooms, switching them once a day without them seeing each other, and slowly building up to their first meeting. OH ALSO- be prepared… frequent spraying or litter box accidents are subtle signs of unhappiness about having to share space. You might wanna buy 2 more litterboxes before bringing in the new baby. I know a lot of this sounds like a lot but, like I said, making the transition as smooth as possible is the key to success imo! Aand my final thing is about the food, i assume it’s c/d or something to prevent crystal in the urine. I would ask your vet personally- always follow your own vets instructions bc vets dont agree half the time, but i know at least that if the new kitty eats c/d it’s not the end of the world. We had one vet who would tell clients to just feed them both the same food (again- follow YOUR vet specifically imo) because she preferred that they both eat the same food rather than one of them get crystals. They also make microchip/ collar tag activated feeders (I think they’re available on amazon) but the kitties may take some time getting used to them.
