Trying to think how to describe why the map works so well, it obviously has nothing on modern open world cities on a technical level, but there's plenty of videos out there on why Source engine maps have such great atmosphere, and this era of "we did as much as we could in the engine and your imagination is going to have to fill in the gaps" is well and truly over, so when you boot up an old game like this and the entire design language is so foreign compared to what we're used to today it's just... fresh, it's a different feeling. It's also more manageable, big open worlds with hundreds of side quests ripping you in every direction can be intimidating, but focusing on one street at a time, poking at every corner of the map, talking to every NPC, finding every bottle of estrogen, it turns it into a local experience that's more familiar, even though i haven't played it in decades i remember all these locations and NPC's like it was yesterday.
