Missed the back-end of the stream (running errands, boo responsibility), but in regards to the palm tree part: As long as you can match most of the would-be typical environment of whatever plant you're trying to grow (temp, relative humidity, soil), you can get just about anything to grow. There are palm tree varieties, just like citrus and banana varieties, that are cold hardy, though usually that means if you're growing them for fruit or for a specific appearance, you likely will have to make heavy sacrifices since said plants would need to be genetically different enough to handle the different environment. You can also temper plants, to some degree, like you do food like eggs, or like metals or glass. To do it properly would require a very bespoke (and thus expensive) space, and a lot of time, since you'd have to let the plant grow to relative or complete maturity and THEN temper it to be able to withstand your local environment, while also hoping through the process it could propagate the new tolerance into its offspring. It's very time consuming to do, and if you're going to go that far, you'd also probably want the tech to be able to read & understand plant sample DNA to make sure you can either see the change taking in real time, or, if need be, go the Genetic Modification route and force the change. The quick and dirty way is to just build a really good, spacious greenhouse, and know that whatever plant you have, you may have to find a dwarf version of it, or horticulture it to stay small. This applies also to your actual house; most plants, once they've sprouted, like hanging out around 50-80F (~17-22C I think), so you too can have orange trees in your house, you just probably won't ever get fruit from them unless they're self-fertile and/or manage to adapt to the space and take off; plants are organisms with differences like people, so you can just happen to get lucky and get ones that seemingly crush it in an atypical environment. As an example, I have the classic citrus trio of orange, lime, and lemon indoors, and all have flowered & fruited inside somehow; I also have very robust avocado, mango, and mamey saplings that are doing phenomenally, despite being tropical fruits. Just takes effort, luck, sun, and water.
