Judging from the protagonist's circumstances, the friend who lent to her such a large sum must have been a truly special, one-of-a-kind friend.

VOA for the question of Favorite Yokai: It depends on what I am looking for when it comes to inspiration. My RLkitto is Half Japanese; specifically his Clan is in North Kyoto around the much rural areas where they take tradition seriously. I know a lot of people would probably say the Kitsune, I can't blame them for that since I have actually written (well WAS) going to write a fanfic with a Kitsune Au, My RlKitto's Oc was a Kitsune and Kitsunes in general are popular. Though recently, I been thinking about the Jorōgumo. which is known as entangling bride but used to be called the Wh*re Spider. When a female golden orb-weaver reaches 400 years of age, they gain powers and start feasting on men instead of insects. Other than that, The Gashadokuro is also a good option for favorites... It's The Giant ass Skeleton that lingers at night just to steal people! (the lore behind it is actually pretty tragic but still.)

They’re usually depicted in the form of a child so I imagine a cheeky kid pulling pranks through the house

7:05:25 VODQOTD: what is your fav japanese yokai! My most fav is Zashiki-warashi. They're yokai in the form of small children that protects house and bring fortune to those who saw them. They also likes to play pranks. It's because they're good yokai! They play pranks and causes mischief but, that's how children are... 2nd fav: ngl birbo, even wayyyy before, I always has a thing with Tengu yokai, I think they're so cool!! Thanks to shoujo mangas that often depict them as handsome, cool, strong, protective & loyal (just like you, no, Sprmo). [ps: black birb manga was one of my teenage fav! bit cringe now, but yes , i also love kurama from kamisama hajimemashita - WAIT, HE IS YOU! ] My 3rd fav would be Yuki Onna - if I am to be a yokai, I'd like to be Yuki Onna! VQOTD: Favorite yokai! Does my answer from Tengu Talk count? I said zenko, which are the good kitsune that serve the gods. Not sure if they count in the sense that you are looking for but I'll put #2 down. #2 - Hasshakusama - it's a VERY tall lady who mainly spirits children away. She can mimic voices (for example, of people that her victim may trust) and just generally isn't all that menacing at all but is considered dangerous because nobody can agree on what stops her. She's a specific kind of taka-onna but it's the modern aspect that got me.
