If you want a different flavor of "versus sandbox game", Fire Pro Wrestling World is pretty flexible, especially with mods. It is more grounded in scope. You would be working with mostly humanoid characters and up to max 8 at a time, but with far more room to tailor how they fight. It is graphically a "sprite paper doll" based game, and supports custom sprites. So any 3d model you have, you could use to make the part sheets. People have used custom parts with the move craft mode to implement stuff like street fighter fireballs, dhalsim extending strikes, etc. There are some really good quality cartoon style model parts on the steam workshop as well. A Kappa head is part of base game head part selection. It is not a particularly balanced game by any means, more like an retro/arcade-flavored wrestling simulator. But you can wrangle most of that into roughly even field once you know how it works. With modding, you can do laser beams, projectile barrages, racing mini-game as submission hold, all kinds of arbitrary sprite replacement effects. As a concrete example, Yukari Yakumo from Touhou has a move that throws a train at her opponent. I have done a version of that as a modded custom move in FPWW.
