So, as a self-proclaimed Mathtelion (there's dozens of us! Dozens) I really wanna say how shocked I was at how many Bettelion just do not understand... basic algebra. So, lemme try and tackle the question Bettel spent so much time on, and hopefully make this really fundamental field of mathematics just a bit clearer to people. I don't expect myself to be successful, but oh well, might as well attempt. So, the question Bettel was doing was: x² - 5x + 6 = 0 So let's say up front: there are two possible solutions to this problem. How does that work, well, let's flip the question around. We'll ignore the "= 0" part of the equation and just focus on "x² - 5x + 6". "x² - 5x + 6" has no solution, not really. It has *inputs*, we can put in numbers to the places where the variable x is, and if we do so we'll end up with various *outputs*. Let's try putting in 0, we'll get: 0² - (5 * 0) + 6 That equals 6, and let's remember both our input (0) and output (6) as a pair of coordinates {0, 6}. If we put in 1, we get "1² - (5 * 1) + 6" and the resulting coordinates are {1, 2}. If we put in 2, we get the coordinates {2, 0}. If we put in 3, we get the coordinates {3, 0}. If we put in 4 we get the coordinates {4, 2}. If we put in 5 we get the coordinates {5, 6}. All in all, the coordinates are {0, 6} {1, 2} {2, 0} {3, 0} {4, 2} {5, 6}. What I want to get across is: x is not representing any specific number, at least not yet. Currently it's representing *every* number. You can put in any number, any input you want and you'll receive a corresponding output. Doesn't matter what you start with, you end up with _something_. Now, onto that whole "= 0" part of the equation. What this part does it, it's limiting the possible outputs the equation "x² - 5x + 6 = 0" has, from the infinite outputs the expression "x² - 5x + 6" has. The key point is, it's not limiting us to a _single_ output here, not necessarily. We could end up with zero outputs that work, or two, or 50. But we will end up with less than we started with. So let's rethink this expression "0"- and yes, that singular number 0 can be read as an expression all by itself! We can think of it as an expression where the input (x) doesn't matter, and the output is always (0). Let's try using the same list of inputs we had before- we'll end up with the coordinates {0, 0} {1, 0} {2, 0} {3, 0} {4, 0} {5, 0}. Compare the coordinates we got from both the expressions "x² - 5x + 6" and "0". Both lists share the coordinates {2, 0} and {3, 0}. Remembering that x corresponds to the first number per coordinate and hey, we've got the solutions to our original equation- 2 and 3! Now this is... a really atrocious, brute-forcey way to tackle this problem- it's not even an exhaustive way to solve it, for reasons I won't get into here. But I hope it illustrates the nature of what we're actually doing with the algebra: we start with an expression "x² - 5x + 6" with infinite outputs, and we then use another expression "0" to limit the valid outputs to a finite set of numbers. Another way to think of it, which many others have stated, is that "x² - 5x + 6" represents a curved line that intersects a horizontal line represented by "0" at two points. You get that by plotting the coordinates from both expressions onto a grid. (btw, when I said *every* number up there I actually meant every *real* number, but let's not delve into that right now.)
