Maybe it's b/c I'm a dad, and I have 2 daughters, but I was on Renoir's side as soon as it was unveiled what was actually going on at the end of Act 2. The guy just wanted his family back and to be able to come to terms with what happened and try to move on, as much as one can move on from the death of a child/brother. Maelle was just being selfish, I don't even think she realized fully what she was asking of everyone. And, it's not like destroying the canvas would be a bad thing. Everyone in there didn't really exist to begin with. It's like deleting a save file in The Sims.
