The word apocalypse does come directly from a word meaning revelation or unveiling; the book of Revelation was also called the Apocalypse of John because these are synonyms. It is likely that we use "Apocalypse" to refer to the end of the world _because_ that is what the revelation is largely about; it does not seem to have had that meaning previously.
