One of the things Nick Freitas (who teaches civics as part of his homeschool coop, and who better than an actual elected government dude) says regularly: "Parents need to be the primary educators of their children." Even if you outsource it to other people, you should be the final authority they know to go to to resolve conflicting narratives. Too often otherwise good and godly people raise children to defer to teachers with crazy agendas.

4:51:31 my mom homeschooled my little brother, in preparation to teach him English she studied it very thoroughly. It turns out English IS actually consistent; any of the weird exceptions are a result of the different language origins of various words. Once you know what word comes from what language, you don't have to guess at pronunciation or conjugation or anything like that.

4:51:43 Some of this has gone in cycles, the awful "whole word reading" was attempted back in the 80s, many schools realized how awful it was, but I heard of it returning as this "wonderful new way to teach reading" around 2019. And I am glowing so hard seeing this. Especially the teacher saying "Why are you doing that? Quit doing that. Quit. You can't sound out, I don't know why you started doing that." This is child abuse. Even if the kid was actually doing something wrong, she is being passive aggressive, she is not explaining anything, she is using shame to manipulate, there is no compassion, no care, no attempt to actually communicate. It is fucking evil. I made a comment earlier today that more teachers than we realize are actually envious of their own students. They are true narcissists who feel threatened when a child is smarter than them. And this thing is a perfect example of this.

This is something to put on the table... Imagine what this woman could do if she did her homework and picked a good charity to talk about briefly "for funsies". Maybe a big ask (understandable if she doesn't trust anything in particular), but she has the power to make certain things happen because she makes sense (or not?) in a way where a lot of people like her.

I don't recall her actually explaining the trick for doing it with your fingers but that is a neat trick so I'll attempt that here. To multiply a number by nine, for example 4: 1. Hold up all ten fingies in front of you. 2. From the left, count fingers until you get to that number, eg the fourth finger. 3. Lower that finger. 4. The raised fingers to the left (of the lowered finger) are the tens, in this case we have 3 raised fingers, so 30-something. 5. The raised fingers to the right (of the lowered finger) are the units, in this case there are 6 remaining fingers, so 4x9 is 36

3:47:21 this makes me more angry than anything else that has been discussed up to this point. When my son was born, he became priority #1 in my life. I check on him several times a night because I'm paranoid he might spontaneously stop breathing or something. And it's not exactly hard to figure out when he's hungry. I can't fathom neglect to the point of death.

2:49:46 This line of thinking is leading me to some slightly unusual ideas, in that I might support more opportunities for foreigners to study at universities in western countries, provided they are studying something useful like medicine or engineering, and that we make sure that they go back to their own country at the end of it. I worry that previous policies of allowing in the most skilled immigrants who will contribute positively to western countries has taken away from those countries the very people who might have been able to bring about positive change in those countries. We want them to have better lives, but we should want them to have better lives where they are, so that more lives are improved. No more building wells, more teaching how to build wells and teaching how to teach others to build wells.
