The Devil May Cry manga explains why Vergil wants more power
@ineedmorecarrots6063

2:32:30 to answer your question on why he wants more power. i believe this isn't explained in any of the dmc games except the manga, but the reason vergil yearns for more power is during the invasion of demons on their home, where kid vergil was attacked by the horde of demons which he almost died until his demon powers awakened. since then he is hell-bent on getting stronger. this is just a tip of the iceberg, because i believe some of it is already a huge spoilers

Thanks for playing my favourite childhood game Bae! You unironically did incredibly well, figured out Vergil 3 way faster than I did as a kid Excited for DMC1! The game's a bit janky but it's got peak atmosphere and vibes, and is also made by Kamiya so has some Bayonetta stuff in it!

Congratz once again for beating DMC3, kinda glad you're taking a break, because sometimes I wish I could experience playing the DMC series for the first time again hahah, so now you can experience it over a longer time , I love DMC3 don't get me wrong but DMC5 is like watching all the build up and stories and dynamics payoff big time, its soooo goood! One thing I am looking forwards to is you getting all the refrences that IRyS, calli and biboo say to you, you'll be like "I understood that refence" Awesome stream Bae! Until next time

Congratulations on beating the game! Now that we are all done I'd like to do character breakdown since a lot of people tend not to look beneath the surface with these brothers: Dante and Vergil share trauma over the day their mother was killed by demons and have gone in opposite directions because of it. Dante adopts a seemingly carefree and apathetic persona that makes a joke of everything and feels no pain(not to say he isn't normally a goofball, both brothers at heart are, but Dante leans into it) though his family is a sore spot for him as he believes thier father abandoned them. Vergil seeks absolute power, security, and control over his situation at all times, attempting to embrace his identity as a demon so he can prevent himself from feeling pain the way a human does. While both of these personas protect them, they also stifle their growth as people. At the start of the game they are in truth still the same traumatized little boys that watched their house burn. Thematically Arkham is a parallel for the worst aspects of Dante and Vergil's facades turned up to 11. This is why his Jester personality pisses Dante off so much, it is an even more exaggerated version of the way Dante treats everything as a joke. Meanwhile the stern, serious, power-obssessed Arkham willing to sacrifice even his own family to become a demon is a reflection of Vergil's persona. When the brothers first encounter each other, despite the fact that they are literally identical twins with identical sources of power, Vergil wins because he is more "motivated". Yes, Dante has rejected his demonic side opposite to Vergil rejecting his humanity, but Vergil doesn't use Devil Trigger or anything else more overtly demonic than what Dante was using. It is a battle between the two on a roughly even playing field and Dante loses because Vergil has a goal in mind, a greater desire to obtain their father's power. Meanwhile he specifically questions Dante's motivations and Dante doesn't really care about any of the death and destruction Vergil has caused, no he just wants to fight. This changes over the course of the game as Dante becomes more invested in Lady and through her, more invested in humanity. Dante growing to care about the world in an echo of what their father must have felt leads to a reversal of circumstances. By the end of the game Vergil who has refused to grow and change is increasingly depicted as more childish and is defeated by a more motivated Dante. I'd like to note that the opening cinematic suggests that the two use battle as a twisted means to show their affection for each other through their facades, because despite everything the two really do love each other as brothers who went through the same experience, share the same demonic powers and influences, and are the only ones that really understand each other. This is a big part of why Dante cries for his brother that he has seemingly lost forever. Another part is the fact that it didn't need to be this way. We see Vergil's potential for heroism when he and Dante put aside their issues and come together to destroy Arkham, whom we've established is a living representation of the brothers'worst aspects. The two could help each other be better, happier people if they could just have time together.
