Once you get the electric beam and spider/magnet ball, I highly recommend going back to places to get energy tanks and powerups. Like the one next to the Volt Forge entrance you saw.

Most of the other energy tanks are either in the next area or blocked by weapons you don't have yet. You'll notice them right away in the next area.

With the electric beam - back tracking is for energy tanks and powerups is a lot easier especially in the desert or if you find broken drones.
