My head canon is that book explains the touchy run controls in-universe. Just as those conquistadors' feet were bolted to the floor from fear of the ancient god, sometimes Edward is seized by a profound terror and for a moment just can't run.

This game was like a legend I kept hearing about in whispers, so it was really fun to experience it alongside you and see its clever design and its heavy influence on some of my favorite games. Glad you checked it out!

Since you mentioned System Shock and Bioshock, I'd like to recommend Deus Ex. Specifically the original 2000 Deus Ex by Warren Spector. It even has a level inspired by System Shock!

Glad you found a retro survival horror you liked! Recently I played the og Resident Evil 2 for the 1st time. 4 times to see all routes. What a masterpiece! More action packed than RE1 which is a good!

Later survival horror took a ton of influence from this game's mechanics and tropes, but they did look at the platforming and go "Ehhhh maybe not"
